Abstract:

Consideration of D-branes at conical singularities leads to generalizations of the basic AdS/CFT duality where the 5-dimensional sphere is replaced by another compact Einstein manifold. Specific examples of this include orbifolds of S^5 as well as the coset space T^1,1, which is the base of the conifold. We also show how D-branes of type 0 theory arise from the orbifold construction and discuss the non-supersymmetric duality that follows.

The second part of the short course focuses on fractional D3-branes which are D5-branes wrapped over a 2-cycle at the singularity. Adding M fractional branes to N regular branes on the conifold produces a non-conformal supersymmetric SU(N) ×SU(N+M) gauge theory. We construct its gravity dual and show that it exhibits interesting phenomena both in the UV (cascade of Seiberg dualities) and in the IR (chiral symmetry breaking and confinement). This gravity dual is a warped product of R^3,1 and the deformed conifold.
