Can AI Publish Cutting-Edge Research in Physics Yet?
AI is solving mathematics, but can it conduct fully autonomous research in physics yet? We review the architectural advances in AI that have led to the recent breakthroughs, discuss the current frontier of automated physics and astronomy research and outline likely scenarios for the next 18 months. We conclude with some speculation about what the recent AI progress means for the future of research and academia and how academics should prepare for the revolution.
